Cordless Power Drills - Uses And Benefits
A cordless power drill is an electric drill that is commonly used for drilling holes in places that have no nearby power outlet. They use a battery pack that can be recharged, and most people will purchase a spare battery to eliminate any waiting time for charging. Cordless power drills have a hammer setting ideal for masonry, a general drill setting, and also have a clutch that is used when driving screws. There are other types of cordless power drill available such as high torque varieties for drilling large holes, and even a right angle drill for those hard to reach spots.
Cordless drill technology has greatly advanced over the years and the power available has increased from the original 7.2 volts, right up to 36 volts which delivers the power of a corded drill. However, every day use will only require a 12 to 18 volt, any less than 12 volt is too weak and anything above 18 volt is very heavy and bulky.
The standard rechargeable battery that is used for cordless power drill are nickel-cadmium batteries. The majority of people will use a Nickel-Cadmium Battery because of their reasonable price and relative reliability when it comes to charging/discharging. However, nickel-cadmium batteries have limited life, are self-discharging even when not used, and can internally short circuit due to dendrite growth. The alternative for nickel-cadmium batteries are lithium ion batteries. This form of battery is even more lightweight, can be charged quicker, and will last longer than a ni-cad. Some drawbacks of a Lithium-ion battery is that they are a little bit more pricey and lose power in very cold conditions. These are the main considerations when choosing the type of battery that you will use for your cordless electric drill.
Overall, a cordless power drill is highly recommended for your home improvement projects, and whilst it may lack the power of a corded drill, the benefits far outweigh the negatives.
